Academic Policies

This page refers to various academic policies that faculty and students are likely to encounter. For a full listing of all College policies and procedures, visit the Official Randolph College Policies Site.

Class Attendance, Student Absences, and Missed Work Policy

As of Fall 2024, the Provost’s Office and the Office of Access Services will no longer be sending out “Supportive Measures: Absence” letters to faculty and students. Students will negotiate their absences directly with faculty.

We recommend that students contact professors if a class will be missed. It is best, when possible, to let faculty know before the class meets so that arrangements can be made to accommodate the absence. The Associate Provost and the Director of Student Success are available to provide assistance to students and faculty with concerns about attendance issues.

We acknowledge the challenges that faculty face when trying to be equitable in determining when and how to excuse an absence or whether to require make-up assignments. We believe that Randolph students seek increasing levels of responsibility and trust as they mature and we appreciate the many ways in which faculty and other instructors support their development into dependable and reliable adults. We also stand fully committed to the College’s Honor Code and we expect honesty from students.

Required Accommodations

The College cannot compel faculty to accept an excuse or to consider an absence to be excused. There are, however, exceptions for which faculty will be expected to provide accommodations. Providing accommodations does not necessarily relieve students from their responsibility for completing any course work assigned during their absence. The accommodated absence may, depending on the course policies, be counted toward the number of allowable absences.

  • Concussions: notices issued, primarily, by the Head Athletic Trainer and sent out by the Coordinator of Access Services
  • Contagious and/or transmissible diseases: notices issued by the Health Center and sent out by the Associate Provost
  • Disabilities and chronic conditions: notices will be sent from the Coordinator of Access Services. If a student believes that their medical or mental health concern may be a significant and ongoing health problem, they are encouraged to contact Access Services to discuss potential accommodations.
  • Religious Observances: View the College’s religious observances calendar and information on religious accommodations.
  • Title IX and Office of Civil Rights supportive measures: notices issued by TIX/OCR and sent out by the Associate Provost

Mental Health Conditions

The Counseling Center can provide supporting documentation to the Associate Provost for an extended absence (3 days or more) due to an exacerbation of a documented mental health condition. For more information, please contact the Director of the Counseling Center.

Medical Conditions

The Student Health Center does not provide notes or excuses to students for routine illnesses, injuries, or mental health problems that may lead to missed classes, labs, studios, exams, or deadlines.  See the Health Center Excuse Policy for full details.
